Important three points
After the AFA Cup battering, the importance of a league
win became more apparent when the league tables showed that
a win would take us off the bottom and leapfrog Steelers.
Paul Rudd earned a start after a good display the previous
week and Chris Buckland returned on the other flank. Steelers
like last season had a good goals-for record but had conceded
more. Once again the game plan was to stifle their attacking
flair and expose their defensive frailties.
Both teams started evenly then after 15 mins Marcus cut
into the box and hit the outside of the post with the Goalkeeper
beaten. The disappointment was short lived as again Marcus
found himself in a similar position this time firing home
from close range.
Steelers hit back and a good parried save by Dave Edwards
thwarted the attacker. Unfortunately in a similar situation
Dave could only half stop a fierce shot, which dropped invitingly
for the oncoming Steelers forward.
With half time looming Jay Culligan latched onto a loose
ball some 25 yards out (he will say it was more) and sent
a screamer into the roof of the net. This time he kept his
shirt on for his lap of honour celebration.
Dean Wilson looking lean, mean and sharp turned well to
fire just over.
Notts second half display pinned Steelers back in their
half but missed headed chances by Skipper Neil Mitchell,
Martin Swannell, and Dean Wilson raised Steelers hopes.
A controversial penalty decision seemed to have undone
all Notts hard work however the Steelers player blasted
over and Notts never looked back.
A wonderful end to end move finished off by Marcus Hall
gave Notts the cushion they needed and in the latter stages
of the game victory was sealed as Daz Spencer headed home
at the far post.
